TRELAWNYD FOLK AT THE HALL

We have been running evening concerts at Trelawnyd since October 2009 when we first welcomed Bella Hardy and Dean Owens.  We don’t intend to lose what we consider to be an intimate and friendly atmosphere at the Hall, including cup cakes!

We couldn’t resist however holding a day long celebration, in 2012, bringing back some of the performers who have graced the Hall stage, and adding a few new artists to the bill.

The main venue will be the Hall, but we intend also to work with the Crown Inn (Trelawnyd’s village inn) to stage various events at times on the Saturday.  The venue for the House Party will be The Still House, described by Michael Johnson of The Burns Unit as a ‘Lord of the Rings House' (either because he liked it or because it is not that big!).

The music starts at midday and will finish by circa 10.30pm.  The afternoon and evening performances will be separated by a one hour break.  We need to sound check the evening performance during this break.  We’ll let you know the details well before the event.

I’m sure you know we don’t run these events for profit.  We’ve always liked raising funds for charity through the concerts and this event will be no different.  In the past we have raised over £1,000 for the Alzheimer’s society and we hope to add to this at this event.

We are delighted to announce that our line up for the day is:

…. with more names to be announced soon!

DOUGIE MACLEAN

Dougie MacLean performed a stunning two sets when he visited Trelawnyd in July 2010, and we are delighted that Dougie will be returning to play next year.  The word ‘legend’ is very appropriate here.

Dougie MacLean is one of Scotland's most successful, respected and popular musicians. Singer-Songwriter, Composer and 'magical' Performer, he is also a fine guitarist and fiddle player. He received an OBE from the Queen in 2010 for his contribution to music and charity.

JIM MORAY

Jim Moray played our second ever concert, with his band, back in March 2010.  After that evening we couldn't wait to have him back and we're thrilled he's agreed to play this event.

Jim is one of the most consistently inventive musicians working in traditional folk music today.  After three ground-breaking and award-winning albums – 2003’s BBC Radio 2 Folk Album of Year ‘Sweet England’, ‘Jim Moray’ in 2006 and fRoots Critics Poll and Mojo Folk Album of the Year winner ‘Low Culture’ in 2008 - he now finds himself at the forefront of a new folk revival in the UK, and hailed as a pivotal influence by a new generation of folk musicians while still only being in his 20s himself.

Jim will be performing solo.

KRIS DREVER

Kris Drever is the son of singer-songwriter Ivan Drever, an artist we followed many years ago with Wolfstone.  We first saw Kris when he played at Cambridge (Folk Festival) and we have been huge fans ever since.  He has an awesome voice, and plays a mix of traditional and original material.  We have been lucky enough to have welcomed Kris twice before to the Hall with the amazing LAU - the nicest group of musicians that you are ever likely to meet!  When we were planning the line up for Folk at the Hall, we knew that this day gig would be an ideal opportunity to bring Kris to the Hall to play his own amazing set.  We are very excited!!

THE OLD DANCE SCHOOL

We are delighted to welcome The Old Dance School to Trelawnyd for the first time.

Harnessing energy from the elements and inspiration from their unstoppable sense of adventure, seven of the exciting young folk scene’s finest musicians unleash their duelling fiddles, soaring brass crescendos, wind and vocal harmonies and earth shattering grooves in a genre busting live show that will take your breath away.

“Abundantly creative, energetic, fresh and supremely innovative.”
Living Tradition

“Really hits the mark… There's a genuine creative fizz to what the band do.”
Mike Harding, BBC Radio 2

FAY HIELD

Fay Hield will be visiting the village with Rob Harbron and Sam Sweeney. Together they make a formidable trio.

Their sound is full of zest and nuance, sensitive to the tradition yet utterly distinctive. Fay leads with a voice whose rough edges are still thrillingly intact, and which goes straight to the living heart of the songs.

LUCY WARD

Lucy is a 21 year old acoustic artist from Derby. She plays guitar and concertina but considers her voice to be her first instrument and has been performing regularly since she was 14.  Her sets are an eclectic mix of traditional and modern folk interpretations, interspersed with her own songs.

There is a natural and easy sound to her music that is brought to life by expressive performance and breath-taking delivery. Lucy has the ability to still an audience with the strength and purity of her voice, which she uses to great effect on the unaccompanied songs that sprinkle her set.

“The force of her engaging personality, her forthright performances a broad array of material and the apparently bottomless levels of courage and cheerfulness…help her win over audiences…” Froots Magazine

DEAN OWENS

Dean played our first ever concert in a ‘double header’ with Bella Hardy.  His performance was greatly received, so much so that we have been wanting to see him back at the Hall for a long time.  We jumped at the chance when we started oragnising this event.

Edinburgh based Dean is one of Scotland’s most acclaimed and established singer-songwriters.  Previously the front-man of the much loved and lauded Americana act The Felsons, Dean has subsequently been recording and touring as a successful solo artist.  His stage presence and original songs will stay with you.

"Dean Owens is Scotland's most engaging and haunting singer-songwriter." - Irvine Welsh

"Dean has soul." - Eddi Reader

THE BEAR BEATS BAND

Hailing from the beautiful countryside of Denbighshire in North Wales the Bear Beats Band play an intoxicating mix of contemporary folk blended with elements of world music.  They are gathering accolades across the country, including in 2011 playing the main stage at WOMAD.

All band members are multi instrumentalists playing between them - acoustic guitars, african hand percussion, mandola, banjo, bass & double bass, cajon, saxophone, whistles and hauntingly beautiful vocals.

BLAIR DUNLOP

Blair has already fitted a lot into his young life. From an early age he was encouraged to take to the stage by his parents. He has now blossomed into a greatly admired singer, guitarist and actor.

Some of the highlights of his performing career include playing Little Willy Wonka in the blockbuster movie of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” (Johnny Depp starred as the grown-up Willy), touring for the whole of last Autumn in a new production of the play “Lark Rise” and appearing at festivals such as Big Session, Towersey and Cropredy.

BECCA AND THE BROKEN BISCUITS

Becca and the Broken Biscuits first made an appearance in Trelawnyd supporting Jim Moray in March 2010 and returned to support Roddy Woomble in February 2011. Both times the band received a great reception from the audience and we can't wait for them to appear in June 2012.

Becca and The Broken Biscuits were formed in their initial guise back in 2008. Having gigged and toured the UK as a solo artist Becca Williams got together with pals and fellow musicians Joel Roberts, Rob Hall and Claire Newton to create the unique, melodious sound that you hear today.  Becca is from the nearby village of Caerwys!

"This is grown-up, thoughtful, emotional music that cuts to your heart and feeds your soul." - BBC Introducing
